This is Paul Bowles`s own selection of his best short fiction. The title story, one of his earliest, is about the degradation and persecution of a professor who is kidnapped by a nomadic tribe. The story is so brutal that he was advised not to publish it by, among others, Tennessee Williams. However, it is now generally seen as one of Bowles`s best. Other stories in this volume of 24 include At Paso Rojo, The Time of Friendship, The Little House, and the much-reprinted The Delicate Prey. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
