Everyone in Partout Parish knows that Marcus Renard is guilty of murdering real-estate agent Pam Bichon, but he was acquitted in court. Annie Broussard, a straightlaced sheriff's deputy, intervenes when Renard gets what's coming to him from detective Nick Fourcade. She arrests Nick, which saves Renard from certain death, and as a result, gets the cold shoulder from the department and the townspeople.
