Two interlocking, parallel plot lines dominate this novel, in which Loren is kidnapped and raised by his eccentric, wealthy great-uncle, while his young adoptive aunt, Alma, takes on psychic powers and attempts to find him in a quest that takes her to New Orleans, Vietnam, and the islands of the South Pacific.
